John Javellana (b. 1984, Philippines) is a photojournalist based in Manila, Philippines. His professional career started in 2008 as he was completing his degree as a Communication Arts major at the De La Salle University when he was hired as a stringer for the Reuters News Agency. After completing his degree, he became one of the youngest photojournalists to work for the wire agencies in the country and has covered most of the major news event up to this day.

John’s works as a wire photographer have been widely published internationally on a daily basis both online and in print through every major publications such as TIME Magazine, Washington Post, The Guardian, National Geographic, Republica.It, Newsweek, The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Stern, The National Post, MSNBC and more. As a freelancer, he has been commissioned for a wide range of assignments by organizations and publications such as disaster documentation for Le Monde, CBM, OxFam and the United Nations World Food Programme; A book project for the United Nations Population Fund; travel features for Reader’s Digest and Roam Magazine; commercial and editorial work for Esquire and Preview magazines; geopolitical and various coverages for Getty Images, Amnesty International, Norwegian Business Daily, Greenpeace, FutureGov Magazine, and Asian Literary Review.

Primarily a news photographer who specializes in spot/breaking news, John is also a documentary cinematographer and has worked on documentaries for outfits shows and NGOs such as “58” for US Aid and Asia Foundation; “Philippines : Abuses Go Unpunished” for Human Rights Watch; short documentaries and pieces for Storyline and Rappler.com, where he worked as the photo editor in 2013.

An independent photographer at present, John still maintains his roots as a photojournalist by working with wire agencies such as the Associated Press, European Pressphoto Agency and Reuters from time to time for major news events as he concentrates more on personal projects such as documentaries, advocacies and exhibitions. He has been nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass in 2013 and 2014. His works have been included in the exhibits “CUT 2012” – an annual show held at the Valentine Willie Fine Art Gallery in Singapore that highlights contemporary Southeast Asian photography and “P+ : IPA Filipino Photographers Showcase” an exhibit conducted in Singapore by the Invisible Photographer Asia to showcase young Filipino talent who are showing the world how they see their own country. In 2013 he was part of "Photographers for Yolanda" an exhibit for the benefit of the victims of typhoon Haiyan; was showcased in Art Fair Philippines 2014 for his works on typhoon Haiyan and had his first solo exhibit under Manila Contemporary titled "Home Court" that explores the intimate relationship of Filipinos with the sport of basketball.

John regularly collaborates with NGO's, groups or individuals he could help out with certain causes ranging from human rights to poverty alleviation. He does a lot of pro bono assignments as long as he finds himself in the same position with regards to the cause.
